Strength. Wisdom. Grace.
Each of these portraits embody all of these characteristics. Strength and flexibility for the posture combined with a gracefulness that comes from a quiet mind. Self awareness, patience, and inner wisdom are powerfully present with each photograph.
I am interested in focusing my series on male yogis simply because the current mainstream view of yoga is that it’s for women. The majority of magazines and advertisements for the yoga industry feature women in beautiful, elegant, and enviable poses. I want to show how elegant, graceful as well as masculine men can look while practicing yoga.
I choose to photograph these men to show not only strength and flexibility but also grace, vulnerability, wisdom, and authenticity.
These images of Byron, Steve, Ryan, and Paul highlight what each of their bodies was capable of on the day I photographed them. Nothing more or less. One of the reasons we practice yoga is to embrace our present moment and to practice patience and self acceptance.
This yoga men series is an ongoing personal project and one that I will continue to seek out subjects to photograph. I am honored to have the opportunity to make these unique portraits and I look forward to creating many more. Namasté.
